Optimizing your WordPress site for mobile devices is an important step to take if you're looking to reach the widest audience.
Over half of all web traffic comes from mobile devices, so a site that is only built for desktop users can be creating a bad experience for half or more of your site visitors!
So where do you start with optimizing for mobile devices?
#1 Optimize for Speed
The first step is to head on over to Google PageSpeed Insights and drop your URL into the tool.
This will run a full loading speed analysis of the page you provide along with all of the action items that must be addressed for a good score. For the purposes of this topic, stay focused on the "Performance" section of the report and aim for a 100/100 score.
#2 Ensure Accessibility
After your site is loading as quickly as possible, the next step is to focus on Accessibility. Using the same Google PageSpeed Insights report that you ran earlier, open up the "Accessibility" portion of the report.
Fixing all of the action items on this part of the report will make sure that your site is easily usable on a mobile device and that the content is clear and easily consumable.
#3 Test On Real Devices
Reporting tools and device simulators can help to give you a good idea of how your site is looking and performing on mobile devices, but it isn't the full picture. Testing on real-world devices is the best possible way to ensure that you're delivering the intended experience with your website on mobile devices. Most of the time, having all of the most popular iPhones and Android devices on-hand is cost prohibitive, but fortunately there are other solutions! We like to use BrowserStack, a tool that gives you remote access to dozens of different devices for website testing purposes.
